10 Diseases of the Digestive System
1. Diverticulitis
Diverticulitis is when infected pockets form all along the digestive track. In some cases it can go down to the colon. Doctors are not sure what causes this disease. Feces can get trapped in these pockets which causes bacteria to grow and results in and inflamed digestive track.

2. Hepatitis
Hepatitis is a viral infection that attacks the liver. This can come in several different types: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C. Hepatitis A is most commonly contracted through water or food contaminated by feces. Hepatitis B is transmitted through bodily fluids such as blood, semen, tears, urine, and even saliva. Hepatitis C is transmitted through blood- to-blood contact. These can each lead to liver failure.

3. Cholecystitis
Cholecystitis is inflammation of the gallbladder. Normally, fluid called bile passes out of the gallbladder on its way to the small intestine. If the flow of bile is blocked, it builds up inside the gallbladder, causing swelling, pain, and possible infection.

4. Cirrhosis
Because the liver is the filter of the body, it can be over worked. When a part of the liver is overworked it becomes scar tissue and dies. Cirrhosis occurs when either all or too much of the liver has died. The number one cause is alcohol and can be a result of long term abuse or long term regular use of alcohol.

5. Crohn's
Crohn's is an inflammatory bowel disease that effects any part of the digestive system from the mouth to the anus and can involve lymph nodes and supporting membranes in the area. Doctors are not sure what causes crohn's but possibly think lymphatic obstruction, infections, allergies, immune disorders, or genetic factors play a role.

6. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
Also known as acid reflex. The acids from the stomach come back through to the esophagus from the stomach. This can cause ulcerations in the stomach and esophagus. GERD eats away the lining in the esophagus and stomach if not treated quickly.

7. Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder of the intestines. It is not clear what causes irritable bowel syndrome. Some ideas for what causes IBS include problems digesting certain foods, and stress or anxiety. It causes belly pain, cramping or bloating, and diarrhea or constipation. Irritable bowel syndrome is a long-term problem, but there are things you can do to reduce your symptoms. Symptoms can get worse or better from day to day, but your IBS will not get worse over time. IBS does not cause more serious diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease or cancer.

8. Barrett's Esophagus
Barrett esophagus, refers to an abnormal change in the cells of the lower portion of the esophagus. When the normal stratified squamous epithelium lining of the esophagus is replaced by simple columnar epithelium with cells usually found lower in the gastrointestinal tract, Barrett's esophagus is diagnosed. The medical significance of Barrett esophagus is its strong association with esophagealadenocarcinoma, a particularly lethal cancer.

9. Appendicitis
Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix. Appendicitis is a medical emergency that immediately requires surgery to remove the appendix. Left untreated, an inflamed appendix will eventually burst spilling infectious materials into the abdominal cavity. This can lead to peritonitis, a serious inflammation of the abdominal cavity's lining that can be fatal unless it is treated quickly with strong antibiotics.

10. Celiac Disease
Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder of the small intestine that occurs in genetically predisposed people of all ages condition that damages the lining of the small intestine and prevents it from absorbing parts of food that are important for staying healthy. The damage is due to a reaction to eating gluten, which is found in wheat, barley, rye, and possibly oats. Symptoms include pain and discomfort in the digestive tract, chronic constipation and diarrhoea, failure to thrive (in children), anaemia and fatigue, but these may be absent, and symptoms in other organ systems have been described.
